QUICK ANSWER

How much does a US visit visa cost from Pakistan, and how long does it take?

A B1/B2 visitor visa costs US$185, non-refundable, and Pakistani citizens pay no separate issuance fee. On the State Department's table of 17 September 2026 the wait for a visitor interview was 12.5 months in Islamabad and 7.5 in Karachi, so allow 8–14 months at current waits.

Checked on the official sites on 13 October 2026. Fees and times change, so confirm them on the linked page before you pay. Visa centre charges and any consultant's fee are extra.

What you are applying for

The B1/B2 visitor visa covers tourism, visiting family and friends, business meetings and conferences, and medical treatment in the United States. From Pakistan you apply online, then attend an interview at the US Embassy in Islamabad or the Consulate General in Karachi — and since August 2025 almost everyone has to attend in person, children and applicants over 79 included.

The decision is made at the interview, usually in a few minutes. Under section 214(b) of US immigration law the officer has to presume you intend to immigrate until you show otherwise, and the State Department is plain that you qualify on your own ties to Pakistan, not on assurances from family in the US. Your job, your family and your plans have to make that case, in your own words, and match your form.

Most refusals come down to one of four

  1. Ties to Pakistan
  2. Answers that match the DS-160
  3. A purpose that holds together
  4. Your own funds

Who it is for

Applying on the wrong visa is one of the quickest ways to a refusal, so read both lists before anything else.

You’re in the right place if you are

  • A parent or relative visiting family

Parents and relatives visiting family in the United States, where the trip is a visit rather than the start of a move.

  • A tourist with a travel record

Tourists, especially those with a record of travel to the UK, Europe or the Gulf.

  • A business visitor paid from Pakistan

Business visitors coming for meetings, conferences or trade shows, and paid from Pakistan.

  • Travelling for treatment

Patients travelling for treatment, with a US hospital's letter and the means to pay for it.

  • Refused before, with real changes since

Anyone refused under 214(b) whose circumstances have genuinely changed since.

Step by step · with timings

How to apply, and how long it takes

In the order it happens. Each stage waits on the one before it, so the date you start decides the date you finish. Ranges, not promises — the mission owns the clock.

START TO FINISH8–14 monthsat current interview waits
  1. First

Check that a visitor visa fits

Tourism, family visits, business meetings and medical treatment fit. Work, study for credit and travelling to give birth in the US do not. Neither does waiting in the US while an immigrant petition is processed.

  2. 1–2 weeks

Fill in the DS-160 yourself, truthfully

The online form asks about your work, your travel history, your family in the US and the social media accounts you use. The officer reads it before you reach the window, so every answer has to be true and match what you will say. Have it checked if you like, but never let anyone improve it for you.

  3. About 7–13 months

Pay the fee and book in Pakistan

Pay the application fee and book the interview on the embassy's appointment website; the receipt stays valid for booking for 365 days. Since September 2025 applicants are expected to apply in their country of nationality or residence, so booking in Dubai to beat the queue only works if you actually live there.

  4. Prepare for a short interview

Expect a few direct questions: why you are going, who you will see, what you do in Pakistan and who is paying. The embassy says officers may or may not look at your documents, so they support your answers rather than replace them. Answer in your own words.

  5. At the interview

    The decision at the window

Most applicants are told at the end of the interview. If you are approved, the embassy keeps your passport to print the visa. If you are refused under 214(b) you get a letter, and if the officer needs more checks the case goes into administrative processing, which the embassy says is usually resolved within 60 days.

  6. At the US airport

A visa lets you ask for entry. The Customs and Border Protection officer decides whether to admit you and for how long, and records it on your electronic I-94. Staying past that date cancels the visa and counts against every future application.

    The visa integrity fee

A visa integrity fee, created by US law in 2025, is due when a visa is issued. When and where it is collected is set by the State Department, so check the embassy's fee information when you apply.

Read before you apply

Why US visit visa applications are refused

The grounds that come up most on files from Pakistan. Most of them can be dealt with before you submit.

  • Section 214(b)

Section 214(b): ties to Pakistan that do not outweigh the pull of the US — often a young, single applicant with a modest income and no travel history.

  • An immigrant petition on file

An immigrant petition filed for you, for example by a US-citizen sibling. It points to intent to immigrate, which the officer has to weigh against a claimed short visit.

  • Contradictory or rehearsed answers

Answers that contradict the DS-160, or that sound rehearsed.

  • A DS-160 someone inflated

A DS-160 prepared by someone else with an inflated job, salary or travel history. Misrepresentation can make you permanently ineligible for a US visa.

  • A purpose that does not hold

A purpose that does not hold together: a business trip with no business behind it, or a family visit with no clear host, dates or plan.

  • Funded only by US relatives

A trip funded entirely by relatives in the US while your own finances and ties are thin.

  • A past overstay or violation

A previous overstay or other status violation in the US, which follows every later application.

  • Already been refused?

Send us the refusal letter before you do anything else. It states the grounds, and they decide whether applying again is worth it or would just cost you the fee a second time.

The wait is for the interview, not the decision. On the State Department's figures for September 2026, the next visitor appointment was about seven and a half months away in Karachi and about a year in Islamabad. Most decisions are given at the interview, and the embassy advises applying at least six months before you travel.
