Choosing an Umrah Package: What to Check Before You Pay

How to compare packages honestly, the questions that expose vague brochures, and the costs that are usually left out.

ApkaVisa blog cover: choosing an Umrah package, what to check before you pay

Start with the operator, not the price

Umrah is the category of travel where fraud is most common in Pakistan, for a simple reason: people pay early, they pay in full, they pay for family members, and they are reluctant to be suspicious about a religious obligation.

So check the operator before you look at the price. Registered business name, a payment account in that name, a verifiable address, and somebody who will answer a direct question about what is and is not included.

Never pay into a personal account for a pilgrimage package. If the arrangement collapses, there is no business to pursue and nothing to recover.

Get the hotel name in writing

The single most useful thing you can do is insist on the actual hotel name and the walking distance in metres, for both Makkah and Madinah, before you pay anything.

Phrases like "near Haram", "walking distance" and "close to the Haram" in a brochure frequently mean a shuttle ride. Shuttles run on their own schedule, not yours, and in Ramadan that schedule and the traffic around it can turn a stated ten minutes into an hour each way.

Once you have the hotel name, look it up yourself. Check the distance on a map, and check recent reviews rather than the photographs on the brochure. Five minutes of verification is worth more than any assurance.

If an agent will not name the hotel before you pay, that tells you what you need to know. Walk away.

Questions that expose a vague package

Ask these of every operator and compare the answers side by side.

  • Which hotel exactly, in Makkah and in Madinah, and how far in metres from the Haram?
  • How many people per room at the quoted price, and what does a smaller room cost?
  • Which meals are included, and for how many days?
  • Is transport between Makkah and Madinah private, shared, or by train?
  • Is Ziyarat included, and which sites specifically?
  • Is there a guide with the group, are they with you throughout, and do they speak Urdu?
  • Who do I contact in Saudi Arabia if something goes wrong at two in the morning?
  • What exactly is not included?

Understanding the real distance

Distance to the Haram is the variable that most affects the experience, and it is the one most often misrepresented.

A hotel three hundred metres away and a hotel a kilometre away are different trips, particularly for elderly travellers and particularly in Ramadan heat. The kilometre is walked five times a day, often through dense crowds, and it compounds.

Ask for metres, not minutes. Minutes are quoted from an empty street at three in the afternoon; the walk you will actually do is in a crowd. And check whether the stated distance is to the Haram itself or to the outer courtyard, which can be a meaningful difference again.

The visa and what it requires

Umrah can be performed on several permit types, and which one applies affects cost, timing and flexibility. A reputable operator will tell you plainly which one you are travelling on.

Vaccination requirements are set by the Saudi authorities and are checked. Meningococcal vaccination has been a standing requirement, and the list has changed at times. Confirm the current requirement well before departure — the certificate has a minimum period before travel, so leaving it late can cost you the trip.

Passport validity, and a name on the ticket matching the passport exactly, are checked at multiple points. A middle name that appears on one document and not the other is a genuinely common cause of problems at the airport.

Requirements for women travelling without a mahram have changed in recent years. If this applies to your group, confirm the current position directly rather than relying on what was true a few seasons ago.

Flights, transit and timing

Check whether the flight is direct or connecting, and if connecting, how long the layover is and whether it requires a transit visa. A cheap package built on a long connection through a third country is a different trip from the one described in the brochure.

Check whether flights land in Jeddah or Madinah, because that determines the order of your itinerary and the internal transport you will need.

Check the baggage allowance, especially the return, since almost everyone comes back heavier — Zamzam water in particular has its own rules that vary by airline.

Transport between the two cities

The journey between Makkah and Madinah is several hours by road and considerably quicker by high-speed train. Packages differ enormously here and frequently do not say which they are using.

Ask specifically: private vehicle, shared coach, or train. For elderly travellers this is one of the most consequential details in the whole package, and it is routinely buried.

Costs usually left out

Personal expenses, meals beyond the listed ones, Ziyarat outside the fixed plan, extra baggage, laundry, and Qurbani where applicable.

None of these are unreasonable to exclude. The problem is only when they are not disclosed until after payment, which turns a quoted package into a moving figure.

Ask for a written quote with an explicit exclusions list. Any operator unwilling to put exclusions in writing is relying on them.

Travelling with elderly parents

If your group includes elderly travellers, the priorities change completely, and a package optimised for price is usually the wrong one.

Distance to the Haram matters more than the hotel's star rating. Lift availability and floor level matter. Whether wheelchair assistance is arranged at the airports, and whether it is arranged at the Haram, matters. So does whether the group guide stays with the slowest member rather than the fastest.

Ask what happens if someone in the group falls ill. Who takes them to a clinic, who pays for it, and does anyone accompany them? An operator who has a clear answer has done this before.

Booking timing

Ramadan and the Hajj season fill months in advance, and prices in the final weeks rise sharply for worse hotels. The last ten nights of Ramadan are the peak of the peak.

If your dates are fixed around Ramadan, booking early is the difference between walking to the Haram and waiting for a bus. If your dates are flexible, travelling outside the peak costs substantially less for materially better accommodation.

Before you pay

A final checklist. If any of these is missing, do not transfer the money yet.

  • Hotel names for both cities, in writing, with distances in metres
  • A written quote with an explicit list of what is excluded
  • The payment account in the registered business name
  • A stated contact reachable in Saudi Arabia during the trip
  • Confirmed vaccination requirements and enough time to meet them
  • Passport name matching the ticket exactly
  • A clear answer on what happens if the trip is cancelled, by you or by them

This is general guidance

Rules change, sometimes without notice, and your case will have specifics this page cannot know about. Check anything decisive against the mission's own website, or send us your situation and we will tell you where you actually stand.
